KUSHINAGAR, UTTAR PRADESH — A festive atmosphere turned into a scene of devastation late Wednesday at the Bhainsaha (Chait Barni) Mela, as a 60-foot swing ride suffered a catastrophic structural failure mid-operation. The collapse has left at least 30 people injured, including several women and children, raising urgent questions regarding safety protocols and crowd management at seasonal fairs.
A Descent into Chaos
According to eyewitness accounts, the towering ride was severely overloaded, carrying an estimated 80 passengers—far exceeding its safe capacity. Witnesses reported hearing ominous creaking sounds after the ride completed its first two rotations. Despite frantic alarms raised by panicked riders and onlookers, the operator allegedly disregarded the warnings and continued the cycle.
The horror peaked moments later when the ride tore away from its primary base. The resulting collapse flung passengers into the air, while many others were pinned beneath the mangled remains of the steel structure.
Emergency Response and Medical Crisis
A massive rescue effort was spearheaded by local residents and police personnel, who worked for over an hour to extricate victims from the wreckage.
- Casualties: 30 individuals sustained injuries, with 10 victims currently in critical condition.
- Medical Transport: Six ambulances were deployed to the site, transporting the wounded to nearby facilities.
- Critical Care: The most severely injured were referred to the district medical college for specialized surgery. Hospital officials confirmed that two children remain in serious condition.
Glaring Negligence and Overcrowding
The Bhainsaha Mela, held annually along the Narayani River during Chaitra Purnima, is a major cultural draw for pilgrims from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Nepal. While officials acknowledged that this year’s attendance surpassed all projections, preliminary investigations have shifted the focus toward criminal negligence.
Initial findings suggest the swing’s foundation was structurally unsound and poorly anchored, rendered entirely incapable of supporting the excessive load of 80 riders. Local authorities are now investigating whether the fair organizers had obtained the necessary fitness certifications for the high-capacity machinery.
A Call for Stricter Regulation
This incident underscores the recurring dangers at local fairs where high-thrill rides often operate without stringent mechanical oversight. As the community reels from the accident, there is a growing demand for a comprehensive safety audit of all such seasonal installations across the region to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s tragedy.
Authorities have vowed "strict action" against the operators and organizers found responsible for the lapse.
