India Inducts INS Aridhaman, Strengthening Nuclear Deterrence at Sea

In a significant boost to its strategic military capabilities, India on Friday inducted INS Aridhaman, its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). The vessel is part of the Arihant-class submarines, which forms the sea-based component of India’s nuclear triad—its ability to deliver nuclear weapons from land, air and sea.

What is INS Aridhaman?

INS Aridhaman is an indigenously developed nuclear-powered submarine, built under the classified Advanced Technology Vessel programme at Visakhapatnam.

Following INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, Aridhaman represents the third SSBN in India’s fleet. With a displacement of approximately 7,000 tonnes, it is larger and more advanced than its predecessors. Powered by an 83 MW nuclear reactor, the submarine is capable of remaining submerged for extended durations, limited primarily by crew endurance and supplies rather than fuel.

Strategic Significance

The induction of INS Aridhaman is particularly crucial for strengthening India’s nuclear deterrence posture. SSBNs are designed to provide a second-strike capability—the ability to retaliate with nuclear force even after sustaining a first strike. This makes them the most survivable and critical component of the nuclear triad.

By enhancing its sea-based deterrent, India reinforces its doctrine of credible minimum deterrence, especially in an increasingly volatile regional security environment.

Enhanced Capabilities

INS Aridhaman marks a substantial upgrade over earlier submarines in both design and capability:

  • Increased Firepower: Equipped with eight missile launch tubes—double that of earlier platforms—it can carry K-15 missile (approx. 750 km range) and K-4 missile (approx. 3,500 km range), with scope for integrating longer-range systems in the future.
  • Improved Stealth: The submarine features a refined nuclear reactor with a reduced acoustic signature, making it significantly harder to detect through enemy sonar systems.
  • Extended Endurance: Nuclear propulsion enables near-unlimited operational range, allowing prolonged underwater deployments essential for continuous deterrence patrols.
  • Advanced Design: A longer hull and upgraded systems reflect India’s growing expertise in submarine engineering and indigenous defence manufacturing.

Strategic Timing

The induction comes amid intensifying maritime competition in Asia. With China expanding its nuclear submarine fleet and Pakistan modernising its underwater capabilities, India’s move is seen as a calibrated effort to strengthen its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.

INS Aridhaman enhances India’s ability to maintain credible deterrence and moves the country closer to achieving continuous at-sea nuclear patrol capability—a key benchmark for advanced nuclear powers.

Looking Ahead

The induction of INS Aridhaman is part of a broader long-term strategy to bolster India’s naval and nuclear capabilities. The country is already working on more advanced platforms, including the next-generation S5-class submarines, alongside expanding its conventional submarine fleet.

Together, these efforts underscore India’s commitment to strengthening self-reliance in defence production while maintaining strategic stability in a complex geopolitical landscape.
