The exit of seven Rajya Sabha MPs has dealt a significant blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but within party circles, one departure is being viewed as particularly consequential. While the defection of Raghav Chadha is seen as a setback to the party’s public image, the exit of Sandeep Pathak is widely regarded as a deeper organisational loss.
A Strategic Architect Behind the Scenes
Unlike many high-profile political figures, Pathak operated largely out of the public spotlight. Party insiders describe him as a “silent strategist” who played a pivotal role in shaping AAP’s electoral machinery, particularly in Punjab.
He is widely credited with designing the party’s data-driven campaign model that underpinned its victory in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Through meticulous surveys, booth-level planning, and structured execution, Pathak helped build a robust grassroots network—one that remains central to AAP’s political strength in the state.
His departure, therefore, is seen not merely as a reduction in leadership numbers, but as a weakening of the party’s strategic backbone.
More Than a Parliamentarian
Pathak’s influence extended far beyond his role as a Member of Parliament. Appointed national general secretary in 2022, he was also a key member of AAP’s political affairs committee—the party’s highest decision-making body.
Since joining the party in 2016, Pathak steadily rose within its ranks. His early work with the Delhi Dialogue Commission alongside Ashish Khetan, followed by his contributions to electoral strategy in Punjab and Gujarat, earned him the confidence of party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
His proximity to the leadership was evident. According to party sources, Pathak was among a select few—including Sunita Kejriwal and Bibhav Kumar—who were permitted to meet Kejriwal during his time in custody.
An Unexpected Departure
Unlike some of the other exits, Pathak’s departure came as a surprise. Tensions between Chadha and the leadership had reportedly been building for some time, while Swati Maliwal had also experienced a visible fallout with the party.
In contrast, Pathak remained deeply embedded in AAP’s core organisational framework. His sudden decision to leave has therefore triggered greater concern internally. A senior party functionary described him as an “outlier,” emphasising that he had been part of the party’s core group since at least 2018.
Context Behind Other Exits
The departures of other MPs have been interpreted differently within the party. Ashok Mittal is understood to have exited following Enforcement Directorate action at his residence and business premises. Others, including Harbhajan Singh, Vikram Sahney, and Rajinder Gupta, were not seen as deeply involved in the party’s organisational work.
Several of these leaders also lacked strong links to AAP’s origins in the India Against Corruption movement. Their earlier nominations to the Rajya Sabha had drawn criticism, with concerns that they might be more susceptible to political pressure from rival parties.
Against this backdrop, Pathak’s exit stands apart due to his deep integration into the party’s long-term planning and internal structure.
Image vs Infrastructure
Within AAP, a clear distinction is being drawn between the implications of different departures. Chadha, a prominent public face and once considered a close aide of Kejriwal, represents the party’s public narrative and visibility.
Pathak, by contrast, played a foundational role in building the systems that sustained that narrative. His work shaped how the party functioned at the grassroots level, particularly in Punjab.
This has led to a prevailing assessment within party circles: while Chadha’s exit impacts AAP’s image, Pathak’s departure weakens its organisational machinery.
Defection and Political Fallout
The defections were formalised during a press conference, where Chadha announced that two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs had decided to merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under constitutional provisions. The group included Chadha, Pathak, Mittal, Singh, Gupta, Sahney, and Maliwal.
The development has intensified political tensions and raised broader questions about internal cohesion, ideological consistency, and leadership dynamics within AAP.
Party sources have also hinted at possible personal factors behind Pathak’s move, noting that his father is reportedly associated with the BJP in Chhattisgarh.
A Structural Loss
Ultimately, the contrast between the two key departures lies in their roles. Chadha helped shape the party’s public messaging and national profile. Pathak, however, was instrumental in building the operational framework that enabled electoral success.
His exit removes a key strategist at a time when AAP is heavily reliant on its organisational strength, particularly in Punjab. For many within the party, this is not just another political defection, but a loss that strikes at the very core of its functioning.
