Donald Trump on Saturday indicated that he may have been the intended target of the shooting scare that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, responding “I guess” when questioned on the possibility during a press conference.
Reflecting on the incident, Trump remarked that individuals who have a significant public impact are often targeted, stating, “I studied assassinations… the people that make an impact, they’re the ones that they go after.” His comments came hours after the security breach triggered panic at the high-profile gathering in Washington, D.C.
The President also suggested a broader pattern of political violence, noting that “this is not the first time our Republicans have been attacked,” while describing the episode as “very unexpected.”
Swift Security Response
Addressing reporters from the White House, Trump praised the response of the United States Secret Service and law enforcement agencies. He said an armed individual had charged a security checkpoint carrying multiple weapons and was quickly subdued.
According to Trump, authorities acted “very quickly,” adding that video footage of the incident would be released for “transparency and clarity.” He further described the suspect as a “thug who attacked our Constitution.”
Officer Injured but Protected
The President confirmed that one officer sustained a gunshot impact but was saved by a bullet-resistant vest. He noted that the officer had been shot at close range with a high-powered weapon, but the protective gear prevented serious injury.
“He’s doing great. He’s in great shape; he has very high spirits,” Trump said, adding that he had personally conveyed his appreciation and support to the injured officer.
Concerns Over Venue Security
Trump also questioned the adequacy of security arrangements at the venue, the Washington Hilton, suggesting that events of such prominence should be held in more fortified locations such as the White House.
He emphasised the need for enhanced infrastructure to counter evolving threats, pointing to features such as bulletproof and drone-resistant protections. “We need levels of security that probably nobody’s ever seen before,” he said, underlining calls from security agencies for more controlled and secure environments.
Investigation Underway
The United States Secret Service confirmed that it is investigating the shooting near the screening area outside the venue. One individual has been taken into custody, and the incident prompted the evacuation of the banquet hall, with guests escorted out under heightened security.
Reference to Previous Assassination Attempt
The episode has drawn renewed attention to threats against the President, particularly following the July 13 2024 Butler rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. During that incident, Trump—then a presidential candidate—was grazed in the ear when multiple shots were fired at a campaign rally.
The attacker, identified as Thomas Crooks, was subsequently killed by a government sniper, while one bystander lost their life and two others were injured.
The latest incident has once again underscored the persistent and evolving security challenges surrounding high-profile political figures in the United States.
