BJP Slams Kharge’s Remarks, Accuses Congress of Provocative Rhetoric

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday strongly criticised Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remarks likening the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP to a “poisonous snake,” with party spokesperson Shehzaad Poonawalla accusing the Congress of inciting hostility.

Kharge, while addressing a gathering, had stated that even during prayer, a poisonous snake must be killed if encountered—drawing a parallel with the BJP and RSS. The remarks triggered sharp reactions from the ruling party.

Responding to the statement, Poonawalla alleged that the Congress had “crossed a new low,” accusing it of promoting dangerous and divisive rhetoric. In a post on X, he further claimed that such statements amounted to provocation against political opponents and called for intervention by the Election Commission.

“This is the lowest ebb for Congress. It is the most undemocratic and irresponsible statement. The Election Commission must take cognisance,” Poonawalla said.

Earlier Controversy Over Gujarat Remarks

The controversy comes on the heels of another statement by Kharge that drew widespread criticism. While campaigning in Kerala, he remarked that people in the state are “educated and aware” and cannot be easily misled, in contrast to those in Gujarat and certain other regions.

“Do not mislead the people of Kerala. They are educated and discerning. You may be able to misguide people elsewhere, but not here,” Kharge had said.

Reacting strongly, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel condemned the remarks, stating that they were insulting to the people of the state and undermined its dignity.

He further added that such comments not only disrespected the citizens of Gujarat but also diminished the legacy of national icons such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Political Tensions Escalate

The exchange underscores the intensifying political rhetoric between the BJP and the Congress, with both parties trading sharp accusations as campaigning activity gains momentum. The controversy has once again brought attention to the tone of political discourse, with calls for restraint and accountability growing louder across the political spectrum.
