The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday released its manifesto for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, outlining a wide-ranging agenda focused on welfare measures, governance reforms, and legal initiatives, including the proposed implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within six months of assuming power.
The party’s “Sankalp Patra” was unveiled in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who described the document as a roadmap to “lift every section of Bengal out of despair” and align the state with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
Addressing the gathering, Shah said the manifesto seeks to provide direction and relief to farmers affected by crop losses, unemployed youth, and women facing safety concerns, while also aiming to restore confidence among citizens regarding the state’s cultural identity and governance.
Key Promises
The BJP’s manifesto presents a blend of economic support, institutional reforms, and law-and-order measures:
- A stringent crackdown on infiltration, framed as a national security priority
- A proposed White Paper detailing alleged corruption and governance failures under the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the past 15 years
- Measures to dismantle “syndicate” networks and curb the so-called “cut money” culture
- Implementation of the 7th Pay Commission and dearness allowance (DA) for government employees and pensioners
- Creation of one crore jobs and self-employment opportunities over five years, alongside a monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000 for unemployed youth
- Women-centric initiatives, including ₹3,000 monthly support, 33% reservation in state government jobs, and the formation of women-only police battalions and “Durga Surokha Squads”
- Inclusion of Kurmali and Rajbongshi languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution
- Enhanced support for key agricultural sectors, including rice, potato, and mango cultivation
- Legislative steps toward implementing the Uniform Civil Code and stricter laws to curb cattle smuggling
Additional Initiatives
Beyond these core proposals, the manifesto also outlines plans to revitalise traditional industries and improve social infrastructure. These include rejuvenating old tea gardens to strengthen Darjeeling’s tea branding and modernising the state’s jute industry.
In the healthcare and education sectors, the BJP has promised the rollout of Ayushman Bharat Yojana alongside other central welfare schemes, free HPV vaccination, and expanded cancer screening programmes. It also proposed the establishment of premier institutions such as AIIMS, IIT, and IIM in North Bengal.
Cultural and legislative initiatives feature prominently as well, with commitments to set up a “Vande Mataram” museum and enact laws to safeguard freedom of religious practices.
As political activity intensifies ahead of the 2026 elections, the BJP’s manifesto signals an assertive pitch to voters, combining welfare assurances with promises of structural reforms and stricter governance.
