A re-examination of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units used in the Chandivali Assembly constituency of Maharashtra is scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
This development follows a directive from the Bombay High Court permitting the inspection and recount of EVM-VVPAT records for the constituency. The process will be conducted under stringent supervision, with technical experts and engineers deployed to ensure transparency and procedural integrity.
Background to the Re-Examination
The petition was filed by Congress leader Naseem Khan, who raised concerns regarding the integrity of the EVMs, alleging possible tampering and improper programming. Khan had initially sought the inspection in November 2024 and deposited the required fees; however, the process was delayed pending judicial clearance.
Welcoming the High Court’s decision, Khan described the order as “historic,” reiterating his apprehensions about the functioning of the machines. “Our petition clearly outlined doubts regarding the EVMs. We suspect tampering and improper programming, and several concerns remain unaddressed,” he stated in a media interaction.
Notably, this marks the first instance in the history of the Election Commission of India (ECI) where votes recorded through EVMs will undergo such a re-examination process.
Chandivali Election Outcome
In the Chandivali Assembly election, Shiv Sena candidate Dilip Bhausaheb Lande secured victory with 1,24,641 votes, while Naseem Khan finished as the runner-up with 1,04,016 votes.
Lande registered a vote share of 52.39 percent, compared to Khan’s 43.72 percent, reflecting a significant margin in the final tally.
