Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings are awaiting a final call from former captain MS Dhoni on his match fitness as they navigate a challenging Indian Premier League 2026 campaign marked by inconsistency and injuries.
According to reports, Dhoni—who has been sidelined for nearly a month due to a calf injury—could make his return either in Thursday’s high-profile encounter against the Mumbai Indians or in the subsequent fixture against the Gujarat Titans on April 26, subject to his assessment of his own fitness.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter was seen training and keeping wickets at the Wankhede Stadium ahead of the clash, signalling progress in his recovery. However, he is yet to formally communicate his availability to the team management.
Dhoni had suffered a calf strain prior to the start of the season and missed several of CSK’s away fixtures, though he has now rejoined the squad in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, both CSK and Mumbai Indians—two of the most successful franchises in IPL history with a combined 10 titles—are seeking to regain consistency. The contest is further heightened by the possible return of Mumbai’s former captain Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a hamstring injury.
While Rohit reportedly skipped a recent training session, Dhoni participated in practice drills, raising the possibility of featuring at least as an Impact Substitute.
Beyond the marquee names, both teams continue to grapple with broader challenges. CSK, in particular, have struggled to settle on a consistent playing combination. Their campaign suffered a fresh setback with a hamstring injury to promising youngster Ayush Mhatre, who had been among their key contributors with 201 runs.
As the league progresses, the availability of experienced players like Dhoni and Rohit could prove pivotal in shaping the fortunes of their respective teams in what remains a tightly contested season.
