Delhi Police on Friday carried out a detailed crime scene reconstruction in connection with the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman in South Delhi’s Kailash Hills, as investigators widened the scope of the probe to include the family of the accused.
The accused, Rahul Meena (23), is currently in police custody. Officials indicated that his father, based in Alwar, and his uncle in Gurugram are likely to be questioned regarding his background, behaviour, and movements before and after the crime.
According to investigators, questioning will focus on Meena’s alleged phone addiction, gambling habits, and mounting financial liabilities—reportedly amounting to ₹7 lakh—which may have influenced his actions. Authorities are also planning to conduct a psychoanalysis test to better understand his behavioural patterns and mental state.
In a significant development, police have recovered the victim’s mobile phone, which had been taken by the accused following the assault. The device was later discarded near a park in Garhi Village.
Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday morning when the victim, the daughter of a civil servant, was alone at her residence. The accused allegedly entered the premises using a spare keycard and reached the floor where she was studying. Investigators believe he attacked her after she refused to give him money, subsequently committing sexual assault. The victim died during the attack and was later discovered by her parents.
Meena was arrested the same day from a hotel in Dwarka. According to the hotel manager, the accused appeared calm and cooperative at the time of check-in, identifying himself as “Rahul Kumar” and claiming to be from Alwar. He reportedly paid ₹1,500 in cash and checked into a room before police arrived later in the day and apprehended him.
Investigators said the accused had hired a cab to reach Dwarka after the crime and had switched off his personal phone shortly thereafter. At the hotel, he reportedly ordered food and purchased clothing online. Police have since recovered blood-stained clothes believed to belong to the accused, along with garments belonging to the victim’s brother, which Meena allegedly used to change after the incident.
A senior police officer stated that the reconstruction exercise aimed to determine how the accused managed to enter and exit the premises without being detected by multiple surveillance cameras. As part of standard legal procedure, a potency test has also been conducted.
Authorities further revealed that Meena has, at times, displayed a lack of remorse during interrogation, maintaining a calm demeanour while recounting the events. The planned psychoanalysis is expected to provide deeper insights into his psychological condition.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Police confirmed that Meena’s father and five other relatives have been detained for questioning. Following initial inquiries in Rajasthan, they are expected to be handed over to Delhi Police for further investigation.
The accused has been remanded to four days of police custody as the investigation continues to uncover critical details surrounding the crime and its aftermath.
