Iran–US Talks Show Limited Progress as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate

Negotiations between Iran and the United States have registered incremental progress, but significant differences remain unresolved—particularly over nuclear policy and security arrangements tied to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf acknowledged forward movement in the talks but cautioned that key disagreements persist. “There are some issues on which we insist. They also have red lines… We have had progress, but there is still a big distance between us,” he said, underscoring the limited convergence so far.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump described the ongoing diplomatic engagement as “very good conversations,” signalling continued dialogue despite mounting tensions in the region.

Strait of Hormuz Emerges as Core Pressure Point

Fresh friction has arisen over Iran’s firm stance on maintaining control over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments.

Iranian authorities have indicated that access to the waterway could remain restricted unless broader geopolitical conditions are addressed. The country has also signalled its intention to retain oversight of shipping activity, including setting transit and security conditions.
