West Asia Conflict LIVE: Ceasefire Under Strain as Israel Intensifies Strikes in Lebanon

The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran showed signs of strain on Thursday, as Israel escalated its military operations in Lebanon, raising concerns over a broader regional escalation.

Israel confirmed that it had killed Ali Yusuf Harshi, the nephew and personal secretary of Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem, in an overnight strike on Beirut. The development comes amid renewed hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

US Warns of Military Readiness

US President Donald Trump stated that American military assets would remain deployed in and around Iran until the terms of the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran are fully implemented. He warned that the United States would resume military action if compliance is not ensured.

Vice President JD Vance indicated that Israel has proposed limiting its operations in Lebanon during the course of ongoing US-Iran negotiations, although developments on the ground suggest continued volatility.

Hezbollah Retaliates; Israel Escalates

Hezbollah confirmed that it had launched rockets towards Israel in response to what it described as violations of the US-Iran truce. In retaliation, Israel carried out one of its deadliest rounds of strikes in Lebanon since the conflict began, with reports indicating that over 250 people were killed on Wednesday alone.

The renewed violence follows a brief pause under the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, highlighting the fragility of the arrangement.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions Resurface

Iran, which had earlier signalled a willingness to reopen the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, moved to close the waterway again amid rising tensions. The move has heightened global concerns, given the strait’s importance for international energy supplies and trade.

Israel Signals Readiness for Further Action

In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel remains prepared to escalate its military response. “We are ready to return to fighting at any time,” he said, adding that the country remains on high alert.

Nuclear Issue Remains Central

Tehran has reiterated that its nuclear programme is peaceful, despite enriching uranium to levels of up to 60 per cent—close to weapons-grade material. President Trump stated that the United States is willing to work with Iran to remove enriched uranium, although there has been no official confirmation from Tehran regarding such an arrangement.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

The White House confirmed that the United States will proceed with direct talks with Iran, even as the regional situation remains volatile. Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation to Islamabad, accompanied by special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, with talks scheduled to begin shortly.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has urged both Washington and Tehran to include Lebanon within the scope of the ceasefire agreement, in an effort to stabilise the broader region.

Ceasefire Outlook Uncertain

Now in its second day, the US-Iran ceasefire has already come under pressure due to intensified Israeli strikes in Lebanon. While both Washington and Tehran have declared initial success in securing the truce, the continuing hostilities threaten to derail diplomatic progress.

The ongoing conflict has already resulted in thousands of casualties across the Middle East and caused significant disruption to the global economy, with the situation remaining highly fluid and uncertain.
