Internal divisions within the Indian National Congress in Karnataka have come to the fore, with senior leaders expressing concern over recent disciplinary actions against key minority leaders. Amid the growing unease, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has sought to downplay the issue, asserting that no particular group within the party is being targeted..
The developments follow action taken against the Chief Minister’s former political secretary Naseer Ahmed and the suspension of MLC Abdul Jabbar, triggering discontent among sections of the party’s minority leadership in the wake of recent bypoll developments.
Rift Surfaces Within Minority Leadership
Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan openly criticised the manner in which the disciplinary measures were implemented, stressing the need for due process.
“Taking action suddenly is not appropriate. There is a procedure that must be followed—issuing a notice, seeking clarification, and only then arriving at a decision,” he said in Bengaluru.
Defending Naseer Ahmed, Zameer highlighted his seniority within the party and argued that any allegations of anti-party activity should have been addressed through established mechanisms. He added that several leaders, including senior Congress figure Satish Jarkiholi, shared similar concerns.
Zameer also acknowledged dissatisfaction among sections of minority leaders and religious figures, while maintaining that efforts were underway to resolve the situation. He was responding to reports that some Muslim religious leaders had written to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressing concern over the developments.
Leadership Moves to Contain Fallout
Responding to allegations of selective action, Shivakumar rejected claims of bias, stating that party discipline applies uniformly to all members. “No one is being victimised. Discipline is the same for everyone, and all must adhere to it,” he said.
His remarks come amid internal debate over whether the disciplinary action was taken hastily, without adhering to established party procedures.
Challenge of Maintaining Unity
The episode has highlighted a widening rift within the party’s minority ranks, particularly following the Davangere bypoll developments, where allegations of anti-party activities led to action against several leaders.
While some within the party have defended the measures as necessary to uphold discipline, others have cautioned that procedural lapses could deepen discontent among key support groups.
With grievances voiced by minority leaders, concerns raised by religious figures, and visible differences among senior functionaries, the Congress leadership now faces the challenge of balancing internal discipline with political cohesion.
Party insiders suggest that the coming days will be critical in determining whether dialogue can contain the fallout or whether the divisions risk widening further.
