Train travel in India is entering a new phase with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper in 2026, marking a significant upgrade in long-distance overnight journeys. Designed to deliver higher speeds, enhanced comfort, and modern amenities, the new sleeper variant is expected to redefine intercity connectivity.
First Route and Network Expansion
According to Indian Railways and the Press Information Bureau, the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service commenced operations in January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya.
Focus has now shifted to the next major corridor—the proposed Mumbai–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper route. The development was confirmed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a communication dated April 5, which was later shared publicly by Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan.
Faster Travel on a Key Corridor
The upcoming service is expected to significantly reduce travel time on the busy Mumbai–Bengaluru route, with indirect benefits for passengers travelling via Pune—one of the corridor’s प्रमुख transit hubs.
Currently, the Pune–Bengaluru journey takes over 18 hours by conventional trains, covering approximately 938 kilometres. With the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, travel time is projected to drop to around 12–13 hours, offering a substantial improvement in efficiency.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The train is expected to pass through major junctions along the route, enhancing connectivity between key economic, educational, and technological centres across western and southern India. Pune is likely to serve as a critical stop, linking major urban clusters along the corridor.
Modern Features and Passenger Comfort
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are equipped with advanced features aimed at improving passenger experience:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- AC First, Second, and Third-tier sleeper berths
- 16-coach configuration with capacity for over 800 passengers
- Ergonomically designed berths for improved comfort
- Advanced suspension system for smoother rides
- Noise reduction technology
- Enhanced safety systems, including the Kavach
- Automatic door mechanisms
- Operational speeds of up to 160–180 km/h
Fare Expectations
While official fares are yet to be announced, early indications suggest a premium yet competitive pricing structure, with higher tariffs expected for AC First Class in line with enhanced comfort and onboard amenities.
A Step Towards Modern Rail Travel
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise overnight travel and elevate service standards. For commuters on high-demand routes such as Bengaluru–Pune, the new service is poised to offer a faster, more comfortable, and efficient alternative to existing train options.
