Mira Road Stabbing Probe Turns to Suspected Lone-Wolf Terror Angle

The pre-dawn stabbing incident on April 27 in Mumbai’s Mira Road area has taken a grave turn, with investigators now examining it as a potential lone-wolf terror attack driven by radical ideology.

The attack occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on Monday at an under-construction site in Naya Nagar, where two security guards—Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen—were assaulted. Both victims sustained serious injuries, with one reported to be in critical condition. What initially appeared to be a case of violent assault has since evolved into a matter of significant security concern, following revelations about the alleged motive and method.

According to Mumbai Police, the accused, Zaib Zubair Ansari, is believed to have deliberately profiled his victims prior to the attack. Investigators allege that he approached the guards, asked for their names, inquired about their religious identity, and attempted to verify whether they could recite the Islamic kalma. Upon their inability to do so, he allegedly produced a knife and carried out the stabbing. Officials state that this sequence of actions strongly suggests the victims were targeted on the basis of religion.

Law enforcement authorities have characterised the incident as religiously motivated and indicative of a “lone-wolf” pattern—where an individual executes an attack independently, without direct operational support from an organised group, but is influenced by extremist ideology. The case has now been transferred to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which is conducting a deeper probe into possible ideological links.

Preliminary findings indicate that the accused may have undergone self-radicalisation through online platforms. Investigators examining his digital footprint have reportedly identified activity on multiple Telegram channels known for disseminating extremist interpretations of jihad, including narratives that advocate violence against “non-believers.” Materials referencing global conflict zones, including Gaza, and notes invoking the concept of “real jihad” have also been recovered.

While no direct operational links to any recognised terrorist organisation have been established at this stage, officials believe the accused may have been influenced by propaganda associated with groups such as ISIS. This aligns with a broader and increasingly observed pattern of decentralised radicalisation, where individuals are influenced through digital ecosystems rather than formal recruitment networks.

The incident has also raised wider security concerns, particularly in light of recent attacks—such as the Pahalgam case—where victims were reportedly targeted after their identities were established. Security agencies are now assessing whether these incidents reflect an emerging trend of ideologically driven, identity-based violence.

Authorities have intensified investigative efforts, including searches at the accused’s residence in Mira Road and ongoing interrogation. Officials maintain that the primary focus remains on determining the depth of radicalisation, identifying any potential contacts, and assessing whether others may have been exposed to or influenced by similar extremist content.
