Modi Sharpens BJP Campaign in West Bengal, Pledges Faster CAA Implementation and Targets TMC

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s campaign in poll-bound West Bengal, placing emphasis on citizenship, illegal immigration, and governance, while promising expedited implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) if the party assumes power.

Addressing a public rally in Katwa, located in Purba Bardhaman district, the Prime Minister sought to reassure refugee communities, particularly the Matua and Namasudra groups, regarding their citizenship status. He stated that eligible applicants would see an accelerated process under the CAA framework, reaffirming that the law was enacted to provide citizenship to persecuted communities.

Focus on Infiltration and Governance

In a pointed attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), Modi adopted a strong stance on illegal immigration, warning that infiltrators would be identified and action taken against those facilitating their presence. The remarks formed a central part of the BJP’s campaign narrative on national security and border management.

The Prime Minister also criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that her government’s tenure had been marked by fear and instability. He called on voters to support what he described as a governance model based on “trust and development.”

Promises of Accountability

Highlighting issues of corruption and law and order, Modi announced that a BJP government would release a White Paper detailing alleged irregularities under the current administration. He further proposed the establishment of an inquiry commission, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, to investigate incidents of political violence in the state.

Election Schedule

West Bengal is set to vote in two phases on April 23 and 29, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The outcome is expected to be closely watched as the BJP seeks to challenge the TMC’s decade-long dominance in the state’s political landscape.
