Mumbai: The heavily congested Thane–Mira Bhayandar corridor in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set for a significant infrastructure upgrade, as the Government of Maharashtra accelerates multiple projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity.
Metro-10 Project Fast-Tracked
At the centre of the overhaul is Metro-10, a 9.7-kilometre elevated corridor connecting Gaimukh (Retibunder) to Ghodbunder. The project is expected to go to tender shortly, with construction likely to commence within the next three to four months. Authorities have set a completion target of 2029, with an estimated project cost of ₹8,553 crore.
The new metro line will extend the existing Dahisar–Kashigaon corridor, linking previously disconnected routes and providing a seamless transit option for commuters across key residential and commercial zones.
Improved Connectivity for Key Areas
Metro-10 is expected to significantly benefit residents of Thane, Mira Road, Bhayandar, and the Ghodbunder region. By offering a faster, traffic-free alternative to road travel, the corridor is projected to reduce commute times for thousands of daily passengers travelling towards Mumbai.
Ghodbunder Road Expansion
In parallel, authorities have proposed a major widening of the heavily congested Ghodbunder Road. The plan involves expanding the road from 30 metres to 60 metres, effectively doubling its capacity.
The 5.5 to 6-kilometre concrete road project is estimated to cost approximately ₹1,200 crore. Officials have been instructed to expedite the work and aim for completion before the onset of the monsoon.
Additional Projects in the Pipeline
Further measures include the introduction of pod taxi systems across Thane, Mira Bhayandar, and Navi Mumbai under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Detailed project reports for these systems are expected within the next six months.
Additionally, utility pole relocation work valued at ₹75 crore is scheduled to be completed within three months, clearing key bottlenecks for smoother infrastructure execution.
Impact on Transport Services
In a related development, authorities have temporarily suspended licences of app-based aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido over concerns regarding illegal bike taxi operations.
Auto-rickshaw drivers in the region are now required to demonstrate basic proficiency in Marathi, with enforcement checks underway until May 1.
Outlook
The combination of metro expansion, road widening, and alternative mobility solutions reflects a comprehensive approach by the state government to address one of the region’s most persistent traffic challenges. If executed as planned, these initiatives are expected to significantly improve urban mobility and reduce congestion across the Thane–Mira Bhayandar belt.
