Mumbai Resident Challenges Unannounced Housing Rule, Secures Reversal

A resident of Mumbai has drawn attention to an unusual housing society rule that was implemented without formal notice, prompting concerns over safety and transparency among residents.

In a video shared online, Kashish Kapoor described how her residential complex introduced a restriction requiring residents to use a main gate located approximately 300 metres away after 10 p.m., while a closer rear gate was closed at night. She noted that no official notification had been circulated to inform residents of the change.

According to Kapoor, attempts to seek clarification from building staff yielded inconsistent responses. She was initially told that a notice had been placed at the reception, but later informed that it had yet to be issued, despite the rule already being enforced.

Kapoor raised concerns about the safety implications of the restriction, particularly for residents returning late at night. She highlighted that being required to walk a considerable distance alone, especially during late hours, posed potential risks.

Seeking clarity on the legality of such a rule, she contacted relevant authorities and was reportedly informed that the restriction was not permissible. The issue came to a head when she witnessed another resident being denied vehicle entry for pick-up or drop-off, citing the same rule.

Kapoor subsequently approached her landlord, who supported her objections and advised her to formally escalate the matter. She then sent a detailed email to the society’s managing committee, outlining concerns related to safety and resident convenience.

Within days, the rule was withdrawn. Kapoor noted that normal access was restored shortly thereafter, allowing residents to use the closer gate and vehicle entry as before.

Her account has since gained traction on social media, where users widely praised her measured and constructive approach to resolving the issue, highlighting it as an example of effective civic engagement at the community level.
