A stray dog was allegedly beaten to death in Thane, sparking public outrage and protests in the area. Police have registered a case against unidentified individuals and initiated an investigation into the incident.
The incident occurred on Sunday night at a housing society in the Bhojwardi area of Kalyan district. A video circulating on social media shows a group of individuals moving around the premises carrying sticks, raising suspicions about their involvement.
According to reports, the dog’s body was later discovered in the society’s parking area, where signs of a struggle were visible. The घटना has angered local animal welfare activists, prompting immediate calls for strict action.
A local animal rights activist filed a complaint with the police, while representatives from the Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) also demanded firm action against those responsible.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against unknown persons and are currently examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused. Officials from the Khadakpada Police Station stated that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects at the earliest.
The incident comes days after tensions had emerged within the same housing society over the issue of stray dogs. On March 27, a 43-year-old woman who feeds stray dogs alleged that a man had threatened to poison the animals following a dog bite incident. A separate case of criminal intimidation was subsequently registered in connection with that matter.
Animal rights activists have emphasised the need for stringent measures to prevent such acts of cruelty against animals in the future. Police have assured a thorough investigation and are working to identify the perpetrators using available surveillance footage.
