In a remarkable breakthrough, police in Gandhinagar have arrested a well-dressed and highly calculated burglar within 24 hours of a major theft involving assets worth nearly ₹1 crore.
The incident, which initially left investigators surprised due to its precision, involved the burglary of a locked residence in Sector 2 of Gandhinagar on Wednesday night. The accused managed to steal cash, US dollars, and gold and silver jewellery, with the total value of stolen items estimated at approximately ₹1 crore.
Despite the scale of the crime, swift action by the Gujarat Police led to a rapid resolution. In an unusual turn of events, the homeowner was reportedly unaware of the theft until after the accused had been apprehended and the stolen property recovered.
A Calculated and Deceptive Modus Operandi
The accused, identified as Malabhai Samecha, a resident of Narol’s Rangoli Nagar, had developed a distinctive method to avoid suspicion. Always dressed in formal business attire and travelling in his own car, he blended seamlessly into urban environments, appearing more like a professional than a criminal.
Following the burglary, he fled the scene without raising any suspicion among nearby residents. However, investigators launched an immediate probe, leveraging technical surveillance tools and a network of informants.
Acting on a tip-off that Samecha had recently returned home after a prolonged absence, police conducted a raid at his residence. During the search, officers discovered a broken safe locker along with substantial quantities of cash and jewellery, confirming their suspicions.
Confession and Recovery
The accused was taken into custody and subjected to detailed interrogation. While he initially attempted to evade questioning, sustained efforts by investigators led to a confession.
Police recovered stolen assets worth approximately ₹1 crore from his residence. This included gold and silver jewellery valued at ₹92.28 lakh, along with around 7,600 US dollars (equivalent to ₹7.14 lakh). Additionally, the car used in the crime, a mobile phone, and a damaged safe were seized.
A Rare Case: Crime Solved Before Victim’s Complaint
One of the most striking aspects of the case is that the victim was unaware of the burglary until after the arrest. Authorities informed the homeowner only after recovering the stolen items, making it a rare instance where a major theft was solved before being officially reported.
History of Serial Offences
Further investigation revealed that Samecha is a habitual offender with a long history of burglaries dating back to 2017. He is believed to have been involved in thefts across at least 21 houses in multiple districts, including Banaskantha, Gandhidham, Surendranagar, Maninagar, Chandkheda, Kutch (East), Patan, Bhachau, Gandhinagar, and Radhanpur.
Known for frequently changing locations and adopting new methods, he had managed to evade law enforcement for years.
A ‘Professional’ Criminal Persona
What set Samecha apart was his carefully crafted professional image. He consistently wore formal suits, drove his own vehicle, and carried all essential documents such as registration papers, pollution certificates, and a valid driving licence. This allowed him to pass through routine police checks without arousing suspicion.
He also operated under strict self-imposed rules—never committing thefts in his immediate neighbourhood, avoiding conflicts, and working entirely alone. He believed that having accomplices could lead to disputes over stolen assets and increase the risk of exposure.
However, despite years of evasion, his methods ultimately failed, leading to his arrest within a day of the latest crime.
