Tensions escalated in West Bengal during the first phase of polling after a vehicle carrying BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul was allegedly attacked in Asansol on Thursday.
According to reports, stones were thrown at Paul’s car in the Rahmat Nagar area while she was leaving a polling booth. The தாக்குதலில் the vehicle sustained damage to its windows, though no injuries were reported. The incident occurred amid ongoing voting, raising concerns over security arrangements in the constituency.
Paul, who is contesting from the Asansol South Assembly seat, later lodged a complaint at Hirapur Police Station, seeking action against those responsible. Speaking on the incident, she stated that a stone was hurled at her moving vehicle and alleged that the attack was an attempt to influence the electoral process.
Isolated incidents of clashes were also reported from several parts of the state as polling was conducted across 152 constituencies under heavy security deployment.
In a separate incident, BJP candidate Subhendu Sarkar alleged that he was injured and his vehicle vandalised during an attack by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Kumarganj Assembly constituency.
Sarkar further claimed that polling agents from his party were forcibly removed from multiple booths. He said he had intervened to ensure their re-entry, but alleged that he and his team were subsequently attacked when he visited a polling station to assess the situation.
He also raised concerns over the presence of security forces, stating that while central forces were deployed at the polling station, he was accompanied only by his personal security when the alleged attack occurred.
Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the incidents, even as polling continues amid heightened vigilance across the state.
