Uncertainty Surrounds Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Amid Reports of War Injuries

Tehran: Questions are mounting over the health and public absence of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, as reports emerge detailing serious injuries he allegedly sustained during an airstrike earlier in the conflict.

According to a report by Reuters, citing sources close to his inner circle, Khamenei continues to recover from significant wounds suffered in a strike that reportedly killed his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, at a compound in central Tehran.

Sources indicate that the 56-year-old leader sustained severe facial injuries and damage to one or both legs, with some accounts suggesting lasting disfigurement. Despite the reported physical trauma, he is said to remain mentally alert and actively engaged in state affairs. Khamenei is reportedly participating in high-level deliberations via audio conferencing, including discussions related to the ongoing conflict and diplomatic engagements with the United States.

Notably, Khamenei has not made a public appearance since the February 28 strike. No official images, videos, or audio recordings have been released since his appointment as Supreme Leader on March 8. Iran’s authorities have remained largely silent on his condition, with no formal confirmation regarding the extent of his injuries. However, a state television presenter recently referred to him as a “janbaz”—a term used in Iran for individuals seriously wounded in war.

The reported injuries appear to align with earlier remarks by Pete Hegseth, who stated in March that Khamenei had been “wounded and likely disfigured.” Additional unverified intelligence assessments cited by sources suggest the possibility of limb loss, though such claims have not been independently confirmed. Agencies including the CIA have declined to comment, and there has been no response from Israeli officials.

Khamenei’s health has assumed critical importance at a time when Iran faces one of its most challenging geopolitical moments in decades, including high-stakes ceasefire discussions with the United States in Islamabad. His ability to assert authority and steer the country through the crisis remains under close scrutiny.

Analysts note that even with physical recovery, consolidating power within Iran’s complex political system may take time. Experts such as Alex Vatanka suggest that while Khamenei represents continuity, he is unlikely to wield the same level of influence as his father in the immediate term and will need to establish his authority among key institutions.

Under Iran’s political structure, the Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority, overseeing both elected bodies and powerful entities such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). During the current conflict, the IRGC has played a central role in shaping strategic decisions, further highlighting the importance of leadership stability.

Silence Fuels Speculation

Khamenei’s prolonged absence from public view has triggered widespread speculation across Iranian social media, with rumours and conspiracy theories proliferating. One widely circulated image depicting an empty chair captioned “Where is Mojtaba?” reflects the growing public curiosity and concern.

Supporters, however, argue that limiting public exposure may be a deliberate security measure amid ongoing US and Israeli military operations. Sources suggest that visual confirmation of Khamenei’s condition—through images or a public appearance—may be released in the coming weeks, contingent on both his recovery and the prevailing security environment.

As uncertainty persists, the situation continues to draw international attention, with Khamenei’s health seen as a key factor in Iran’s political and strategic trajectory.
