Actor-turned-politician Vijay has urged the Election Commission of India to arrange immediate transport facilities for voters stranded across Tamil Nadu during polling.
After casting his vote at the Neelankarai polling station in Chennai on Thursday, Vijay wrote to the Election Commission requesting urgent intervention. He called for directions to be issued to state transport authorities and district election officers to deploy additional government buses, shuttles, and vehicles exclusively to ferry stranded voters from bus terminals to their designated polling stations.
In his communication, Vijay claimed that thousands of voters were left stranded at bus terminals in Chennai and other metro cities across Tamil Nadu, with limited or no public transport available to reach polling booths. He noted that many citizens had travelled from different parts of the country and abroad to exercise their franchise but were unable to do so due to the large-scale requisitioning of buses and vehicles for election duty, without adequate alternative arrangements for the public.
Meanwhile, several prominent figures from the Tamil film industry also participated in the voting process. Veteran filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar and Shoba Chandrasekhar cast their votes in Adyar. Director H. Vinoth voted in Anaicut, while Pa. Ranjith cast his vote in Karalapakkam and Atlee in Chennai.
Superstar Rajinikanth and his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth voted at Stella Maris College, while Kamal Haasan cast his vote alongside his daughter Shruti Haasan in Teynampet. Actors Vikram and Gautham Karthik also participated in the polling process.
Actor Ajith Kumar, who returned from Belgium where he was participating in a car racing event, was among the early voters in Thiruvanmiyur. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander and actor Dhanush cast their votes in Alwarpet.
Polling is underway across the state for all 234 Assembly constituencies, with a total of 4,023 candidates in the fray. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on May 4.
