Bargi Dam Tragedy: Boat Capsize Raises Serious Safety Concerns

In a tragic incident at the Bargi Dam, survivors of the boat capsize have alleged serious lapses in safety protocols, claiming that the tourist vessel Narmada Queen was permitted to operate despite an official weather alert warning of adverse conditions.

The accident, which occurred on Thursday evening, has claimed at least nine lives, with several others still missing as rescue operations continue. The vessel, operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department and in service since 2006, was carrying more than 40 passengers at the time, although only 29 tickets were reportedly issued. Local sources indicated that additional passengers may have been allowed onboard as it was the final trip of the day.

According to survivors, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms had already been issued by the India Meteorological Department. Officials confirmed that forecasts warning of gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h had been communicated to district authorities earlier that day.

Passengers recounted that no life jackets were distributed prior to departure. Rajesh Soni, who survived along with his family members, described the decision to allow the boat to sail as a “major lapse.” He stated that life jackets were only sought after the situation deteriorated, leading to panic among passengers. “Those who managed to wear them survived long enough to be rescued; the rest drowned,” he said.

Another survivor, Sangeeta Kori, echoed these concerns, noting that life jackets were stored inside the vessel rather than being issued at boarding. As water began to enter the boat, attempts to distribute them triggered chaos and confusion. Within minutes, the vessel capsized.

Eyewitnesses on the shore reported that they had warned the helmsman for nearly 15–20 minutes to turn back as weather conditions worsened, but their warnings went unheeded. Moments later, the boat overturned, throwing all passengers into the water.

Some survivors further alleged that the crew abandoned the vessel before it capsized. Advocate Roshan Anand Verma, who was travelling with family members, described how calm conditions rapidly gave way to violent winds and high waves mid-journey. He claimed that panic escalated as the boat lost control and that crew members jumped overboard in an attempt to save themselves.

However, the pilot, Mahesh Patel, denied these allegations, stating that the capsizing occurred within seconds after passengers rushed to one side of the vessel in an attempt to retrieve life jackets. He added that he himself was rescued by locals nearly an hour later.

Emergency response efforts were led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which arrived at the site after nightfall. According to Deputy Inspector General Atul Singh, the team located the submerged vessel within an hour and began recovery operations. By late night, rescuers had used gas cutters to access the hull, retrieving several bodies before bringing the vessel ashore the following morning.

Local residents, including workers from a nearby water plant, played a crucial role in the initial rescue efforts before official teams arrived.

As of Friday evening, multiple bodies had been recovered, while several individuals — including children — remain unaccounted for. Families of the missing continue to wait anxiously for news. Among them is Jabalpur resident Syed Riaz Hussain, whose wife, grandson, and sister-in-law are still missing. “I am just praying that they are alive,” he said.

The incident has raised serious questions about adherence to safety norms, operational decision-making under adverse weather conditions, and accountability within the state’s tourism and disaster preparedness framework.
