The United States Central Command (US CENTCOM) has completed a seventh consecutive night of large-scale precision bombing raids against military and infrastructure targets inside Iran.
Directed by President Donald Trump, the ongoing offensive aims to systematically dismantle Iran’s offensive capabilities. This escalation follows the formal collapse of a fragile June ceasefire agreement after consecutive Iranian attacks on commercial shipping lanes transiting the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.
Scope of the US Military Campaign
The operation, codenamed Operation Epic Fury, has expanded heavily from its initial coastal focus to encompass deep inland targets.
- Assets Deployed: US fighter jets, warships, and aerial drones launched precision munitions. For the first time, CENTCOM deployed one-way attack sea drones alongside heavy 5,000-pound bunker-buster deep-penetrator bombs to collapse hardened underground missile sites.
- Targets Destroyed: Bombings hit Iranian coastal surveillance sites, air defense networks, command-and-control centers, drone storage facilities, and anti-ship missile sites.
- Inland Shift & Infrastructure: Recent waves destroyed high-value inland communication networks and vital logistics infrastructure in southern Iran. Strikes destroyed multiple key bridges leading to the major port of Bandar Abbas, an airport runway, and a maritime control tower used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Local reports indicate the infrastructure damage has cut water supplies to several southern villages.
- Naval Blockade: Concurrently, a US-led naval blockade has been initiated, with more than 20 warships formally sealing off and monitoring international traffic entering Iranian ports.
Iran's Retaliation and Regional Fallout
In response to the nightly bombardments, Tehran declared the Strait of Hormuz an "invincible red line" and launched aggressive retaliatory strikes across the Middle East:
- Attacks on US Bases: The IRGC claimed to have launched missile and drone barrages targeting 27 US military facilities and allied assets across the Gulf. Impact zones included positions in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.
- Targeting US Allies: Iranian cruise missiles struck two national commercial vessels belonging to the UAE. Ballistic missiles targeted Jordan's Prince Hassan Airbase, though Jordanian air defense systems successfully intercepted multiple incoming projectiles.
- Syria Escalation: For the first time since the resurgence of the conflict, Iran claimed responsibility for targeting a US military facility directly inside Syria.
Geopolitical and Economic Impact
The intensified tit-for-tat exchanges are pushing the broader Middle East into a highly dangerous phase of instability, prompting widespread international concern:
- Global Energy Disruption: The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that the escalating crisis in the Strait of Hormuz—the world's most critical oil chokepoint—poses an immediate risk to global energy security. Global oil prices have spiked rapidly in response to the expanded naval hostilities.
- Financial and Diplomatic Strain: The conflict has already inflicted massive supply disruptions in global natural gas, fertilizer, and aviation markets. The UN Security Council passed a resolution condemning Iran's strikes on Gulf states. Meanwhile, the financial burden continues to rise, with supplemental White House funding requests seeking to offset the billions already spent on active troop deployments and ordnance replenishment in the CENTCOM theater
