KYIV: A devastating daytime multi-drone strike by Russian forces hit a crowded shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih—the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—leaving at least 16 people dead and over 130 others wounded.

Oleksandr Hanzha reported that the casualties included numerous children, with dozens of victims admitted in serious condition. Emergency services and rescue teams rushed to clear heavy rubble as thick black smoke billowed from the heavily damaged commercial structure.

Deliberate Targeting of Emergency Responders

President Zelenskyy fiercely condemned the assault, labeling it an "act of barbarism" and an "absolute Russian atrocity". Highlighting the calculated nature of the raid, Zelenskyy pointed out that it was a "double-tap" strike: a second drone deliberately slammed into the shopping centre roughly half an hour after the initial explosion, specifically targeting arriving emergency workers and civilians attempting to rescue survivors.

"Attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts," Zelenskyy wrote on social media, urging the international community to hold Moscow fully accountable and reiterating Ukraine's urgent need for reinforced air defense capabilities.

The tragedy in Kryvyi Rih comes amid a severe intensification of Russia's air war across Ukraine, following a massive ballistic missile barrage on the capital city of Kyiv that claimed multiple lives just a day prior. International leaders and diplomatic officials swiftly denounced the shopping mall attack, with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas describing the systematic targeting of civilian hubs as "terror by design" intended to make urban centers unlivable.

As rescue and recovery operations continue at the site, the mounting civilian death toll underscores the spiraling humanitarian crisis as the conflict nears its four-and-a-half-year mark.
