Ankara Seeks Interpol Red Notice for Netanyahu Amid Flotilla Standoff

ANKARA/JERUSALEM — Diplomatic tensions between Turkey and Israel have intensified significantly after Turkish authorities announced they are seeking an international Interpol Red Notice for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated that judicial proceedings are actively moving forward before Istanbul's high criminal court concerning the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid and international activists toward Gaza. Ankara has brought charges including genocide, crimes against humanity, torture, and the hijacking of transport vehicles against Netanyahu and co-accused military personnel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office strongly rejected the move, dismissing it as "cheap political theater" and characterizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with sharp rhetoric. Meanwhile, separate Israeli airstrikes continued to strike targets in southern Lebanon despite an active regional ceasefire framework, keeping northern borders volatile.

Israeli Military Admits Firing on Car of Five-Year-Old Hind Rajab

In a separate development, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) publicly admitted for the first time that its troops opened fire on a car carrying five-year-old Hind Rajab and her family in Gaza City.

The tragic incident, which occurred in January 2024, drew global outrage after audio recordings of the young girl's frantic, hours-long phone call pleading for rescue to the Palestinian Red Crescent were broadcast worldwide. Though the military had long denied operational presence or responsibility in the immediate area, a newly released review acknowledged that troops fired upon the vehicle after mistakenly identifying occupants.

The admission has triggered a formal criminal investigation by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division. However, human rights advocates and legal groups, including the Hind Rajab Foundation, have criticized the internal probe as insufficient, renewing urgent demands for an independent international investigation into the event and the subsequent targeting of dispatched rescue paramedics.
