NEW DELHI — Indian women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand clinched a historic bronze medal at the 2026 BWF World Championships, bringing an end to a 15-year medal drought for the country in the category.
According to tournament reports from the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the unseeded Indian duo put up a spirited fight before bowing out to the reigning world champions and top seeds Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China. After claiming a brilliant opening game, the Indian pair ultimately succumbed to the defending champions with a scoreline of 21-18, 13-21, 8-21 in an intense encounter lasting one hour and eleven minutes.
Badminton analysts note that this milestone performance marks India's first women's doubles podium finish at the World Championships since Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa secured bronze at the London edition in 2011. Despite falling short in the semi-finals, Jolly and Gopichand's impressive run through the tournament has earned widespread acclaim from sports administrators and fans alike.
