PARADIP — A Panama-flagged bulk carrier carrying 24 crew members has sunk in the Bay of Bengal approximately 240 nautical miles off the coast of Paradip, Odisha, triggering a massive search-and-rescue operation.
According to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and maritime authorities, the vessel MV Ocean Winner had departed from Paradip Port carrying thousands of tonnes of iron ore bound for Singapore. Communication with the 225-meter-long carrier was lost before emergency signals alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). In response, the ICG diverted nearby commercial traffic, leading the vessel MT Aisopos to successfully rescue two survivors from liferafts.
The Indian Navy and multiple specialized ICG assets—including ships Varad, Anmol, and Vijit—have been deployed to comb the area. Authorities report that the missing crew comprises 20 Chinese nationals, three individuals from Myanmar, and one Bangladeshi national. An investigation into the exact circumstances leading to the sinking has been initiated.
