Israel Seizes Landmark UNRWA Facility in East Jerusalem, Drawing Swift Global Condemnation

JERUSALEM — Israeli security forces forcibly entered and seized the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) vocational training center in occupied East Jerusalem, evacuating personnel, raising the Israeli flag over the compound, and triggering sharp international backlash.

The raid on the historic Qalandiya Training Centre—operating since 1952 as UNRWA's first vocational institute in Palestine—marked a dramatic escalation in Israel’s ongoing campaign against the UN refugee agency.

According to UNRWA, more than 50 Israeli security personnel backed by at least four armored vehicles stormed the compound, detaining and questioning staff before ordering them to vacate the premises. Municipal technical crews subsequently entered the site to initiate renovation work, aligning with Israeli plans to repurpose the land into a local educational and community complex.

A Direct Challenge to UN Immunities

The operation, which was reportedly carried out under the directives of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and overseen on-site by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, drew immediate and fierce condemnation from international bodies and foreign governments.

UNRWA leadership forcefully condemned the incursion, emphasizing that the compound is a protected United Nations facility shielded by international law and diplomatic immunities.

"The entry of armed security forces into a United Nations facility, without the authorization or consent of the United Nations, is unacceptable," UNRWA said in a statement. "Its inviolability must be fully respected."

International allies echoed these concerns. British and European officials labeled the takeover "outrageous", urging Tel Aviv to honor its obligations under international conventions governing the inviolability of UN property.

Broader Crackdown on UN Operations

The seizure follows a series of legislative and physical actions taken by Israeli authorities following the passage of laws in late 2024 aimed at halting UNRWA’s operations inside Israeli-claimed territory. Israel has accused the agency of systemic compromises, allegations that UNRWA vehemently denies.

The Qalandiya center served hundreds of vulnerable Palestinian students annually, offering technical education across 16 different vocational specializations. Humanitarian organizations warn that its permanent closure deals a severe blow to educational and social services for young refugees in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

As military and municipal presences were reinforced at the site, UN officials warned that the precedent set by the takeover threatens the integrity of international humanitarian missions operating across conflict zones worldwide.
