DUBLIN — Ireland’s population has officially climbed to 5.526 million, marking an increase of 66,900 people over a 12-month period according to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office.
The demographic data highlights that net inward migration accounted for 72 percent of the population growth, while natural change—births exceeding deaths—contributed the remaining 28 percent. Dublin remains the primary engine of growth, with the capital's population reaching nearly 1.6 million, accounting for 28.9 percent of the national total. Meanwhile, the demographic makeup continues to shift: the population aged 65 or older grew to 891,100, while children aged 14 and under dipped below one million for the first time since 2014.
The population milestone comes as Dublin plays host to a massive influx of international visitors for the annual Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium. Thousands of American college football fans, including large contingents supporting Texas Christian University (TCU), have flooded the capital's streets, packing iconic spots like Temple Bar and participating in events across the city.
However, festivities are set to unfold against a backdrop of unsettled atmospheric conditions. Met Éireann has issued localized weather alerts warning of torrential downpours, high humidity, and the potential for lightning strikes across parts of the country.
