HOUSTON — Flanked by astronauts at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday establishing the U.S. Space Academy.
Modeled after traditional federal service institutions like West Point and the Air Force Academy, the newly initiated academy is designed to educate and train a specialized corps of engineers, scientists, operators, and warfighters. The institution will cater jointly to the U.S. Space Force, NASA, and the expanding commercial spaceflight sector.
"It'll serve both the United States Space Force as well as NASA and the civilian spaceflight industry, and it'll attract, train, and graduate the very best of our nation," Trump told a gathering of space agency officials and aerospace personnel.
The announcement came during a ceremony where the president awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four-person crew of the Artemis II lunar mission.
To kickstart the initiative, the executive order establishes a Presidential Commission chaired by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. The commission has been given a 120-day window to deliver a comprehensive blueprint covering the academy's governance framework, curriculum structure, student service obligations, and physical site selection.
