KYIV/MOSCOW — Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced it is preparing "massive strikes" against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, signaling a severe escalation in the conflict just days after a devastating munitions depot strike near Kyiv left 38 dead, marking the capital region's highest death toll from a single attack this year.
The Russian defense establishment framed the impending bombardment of power and utility facilities as a direct reprisal for an unprecedented wave of long-range Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian oil refineries, fuel terminals, and major commercial logistics hubs belonging to online retailers like Wildberries and Ozon.
Retaliation and Rising Tensions
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized the planned large-scale energy offensive as "an appropriate response" to what Moscow describes as Kyiv’s deliberate campaign against Russia's civilian economic infrastructure.
The threats follow a bruising week of cross-border aerial bombardments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the death toll from a late-week strike on a storage facility in the village of Myla, just west of Kyiv, climbed to 38, with secondary explosions devastating dozens of nearby residential structures.
