Kildare — Details have been released of the five teenagers who died in a tragic car crash on the M9 motorway in Ireland early Sunday morning.
Even before official confirmation from the Garda (Irish police) was completed, family members and friends had identified the deceased through social media.
This tragic incident has plunged the entire region of Kildare, Carlow, and Limerick into deep sorrow.
Deceased teenagers:
- Joey Carthy - 15 years old (Athy, Kildare)
- Alex McCarthy - 16 years old (Carlow)
- Kamil Pustkowski - 17 years old (Limerick)
- Jack Kennedy - 17 years old (Athie, Kildare)
- Jeremy O'Brien - 18 years old (Carlow)
Accident details:
The accident occurred at around 3am on Sunday, near Moone, Kildare, between junctions 3 and 4 of the M9 northbound motorway.
According to police, the black BMW, which was being driven by the teenagers, was speeding down the motorway in the wrong direction. The car is suspected to have been stolen. At this time, the BMW collided head-on with an oncoming Hyundai. The Hyundai was carrying an innocent family who were on their way to Dublin Airport.
The vehicles were completely destroyed by the impact of the collision. Although it was initially thought that four people were killed, the body of a fifth person was found when the wreckage of the BMW car was removed. The bodies were sent to the Nassau General Hospital for postmortem.
Family in the hospital:
Three sisters and a 7-year-old child in the second car are in hospital with serious injuries. Two of the sisters, including the child's mother, remain in a critical condition. The child has been admitted to the intensive care unit at Crumlin Children's Hospital.
Responses and inquiries:
There has been strong condemnation from political and administrative circles against this type of dangerous driving and crime. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said it was worrying that teenagers were risking their lives on motorways for social media likes. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan described the incident as a serious criminal offence.
Gardaí have referred the case to the Independent Police Ombudsman's Office, 'Fiosrú', to investigate the incident as the vehicle had been stopped by the Gardaí prior to the accident. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact police immediately.
