Devastating Blast at Bolivian Military Facility Leaves at Least 10 Dead and Dozens Injured

VIACHA, Bolivia — At least 10 people were killed and more than 60 others injured on Friday following a massive explosion at a military barracks in the Bolivian municipality of Viacha, located roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from La Paz.

The catastrophic blast occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time within an area of the complex utilized to store pyrotechnic material, according to local authorities. While an official investigation into the root cause remains underway, preliminary reports indicate the explosion originated from a defense ministry fireworks stockpile.

Rita Nebraska, the health director for Viacha, confirmed to local television broadcasters that death tolls are estimated between 10 and 15, with 62 individuals sustaining injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene, transferring 14 of the severely wounded—including a young girl suffering from third-degree burns—to hospitals in La Paz.

Police and municipal workers reported that dozens of surrounding residential structures suffered structural damage, primarily from shattered windows caused by the immense shockwave. First responders, ambulances, and police cordoned off the facility as firefighting crews warned that active heat sources remained at ground zero. Authorities have urged local residents to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters from the perimeter amid heightened fears of secondary detonations.
