Houthi Advance in Yemen Threatens Red Sea Oil Routes

DUBAI/WASHINGTON — Iran-aligned Houthi forces seized control of Yemen’s vital port city of Mocha and pushed further down the Red Sea coast toward strategic islands, military sources reported. The aggressive territorial expansion brings the militant group closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, escalating risks to global energy supplies and threatening Saudi Arabia's crucial oil exports.

The strategic shift unfolds as regional tensions flare, coinciding with statements from U.S. President Donald Trump indicating his expectation that the ongoing conflict with Iran would conclude following the midterm elections. Yemeni government military sources confirmed that the loss of Mocha deals a severe blow to Saudi-backed forces, handing the Houthis increased tactical leverage over the southern outlet of the Red Sea—a critical chokepoint handling substantial volumes of international crude and cargo.

Following the capture, a Houthi-run humanitarian operations center issued a statement asserting that Red Sea navigation remains safe for general international shipping companies, while explicitly maintaining a naval blockade targeting Saudi vessels. As the world's largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia has leaned heavily on its Red Sea transit routes since the broader regional conflict effectively restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Defense analysts warn that a tighter Houthi grip over the western Yemeni coast could grant Tehran a powerful strategic advantage in its ongoing confrontation with Washington. By constricting transit through a second major maritime corridor, the escalation risks driving up global energy costs and unsettling vital commodity flows connecting the Gulf to international markets.
