WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has waived major Russia-related sanctions and tariff measures before they could take effect under a new law targeting countries that trade with Russia.
The legislation provided for tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from countries buying Russian oil and gas. It was intended to increase economic pressure on Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Trump said the waiver was in the national interest. The decision comes amid concerns about rising energy prices linked to wider geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving the United States and Israel with Iran.
The move is significant for countries such as India, which has continued to purchase Russian oil. However, the practical effect will depend on the scope and duration of the waiver and any further decisions by the US administration.
The decision has also drawn criticism from lawmakers who argue that easing the measures could weaken pressure on Russia. The waiver remains subject to further review by the US president.
