Rescued Orangutan Returned to Indonesia in Rare Wildlife Repatriation Case

DOMBIVLI, INDIA — An orangutan rescued from suspected illegal wildlife trafficking in Maharashtra’s Thane district has been returned to Indonesia, its native country, in a rare international wildlife repatriation case.

The male orangutan, believed to be around three years old, was discovered confined in a small cage inside a bathroom at a residential complex in Dombivli. It was rescued in March 2025 and subsequently cared for at the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre.

The animal was returned to Indonesia on October 19, following the completion of the necessary arrangements involving Indian wildlife authorities and Indonesian officials. It was flown from Ahmedabad to Jakarta on a private aircraft under official supervision.

The repatriation followed directions from a Supreme Court-appointed committee. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, staff from Vantara and Indonesian authorities were involved in the process.

After arriving in Indonesia, the orangutan was placed in quarantine and is expected to be transferred to a rehabilitation centre.

The case highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating wildlife trafficking and ensuring that rescued animals receive appropriate care in their native countries.
