NEW YORK — Global technology stocks came under pressure as investors questioned whether massive investments in artificial intelligence (AI) would generate sufficient returns. The Nasdaq 100 fell 5.5% in the week ended October 16, amid concerns over the sustainability of the AI investment boom and rising borrowing costs.
Technology companies have committed substantial sums to data centres, semiconductors, cloud services and other AI infrastructure. However, investors are increasingly focused on how quickly these investments will translate into revenue and profits. Declines in shares and bonds of some heavily indebted AI infrastructure companies have added to market concerns.
US stocks staged a partial recovery on October 19. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.11%, while semiconductor stocks also rebounded. The gains followed a sharp sell-off in the previous week but did not eliminate concerns about further volatility.
In its October Global Financial Stability Report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identified a potential correction in AI-related markets as a risk to financial stability. The report warned that weaker-than-expected investment returns or profitability could trigger a reassessment of AI-related asset valuations. Rising leverage and concentrated exposures could amplify the impact across financial markets.
The concerns do not necessarily signal the end of AI-driven growth. Instead, investors are weighing the technology's long-term potential against the cost of building the infrastructure needed to support it. Upcoming earnings reports and investment plans from major technology companies are likely to influence market sentiment as investors look for evidence that spending on AI can deliver sustainable returns.
