MUMBAI — Air pollution has reached severe levels in parts of Mumbai, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) touching 425 on Sunday morning. The reading places the area in the severe category and has raised concerns about public health well before the usual winter pollution period.
Other areas, including Chembur, Deonar, Kurla, Mazgaon and Navy Nagar, also recorded elevated pollution levels, according to reported readings. High levels of airborne particulate matter can affect the lungs and heart, with children, older people and those with existing respiratory conditions among the groups most at risk.
Mumbai’s air quality often deteriorates around Diwali and during winter. However, the early rise in pollution has prompted concerns that residents could face unhealthy air for a longer period this year. Weather patterns, rainfall and temperature can also influence how pollutants build up in the atmosphere.
Monitoring air quality and enforcing pollution-control measures will be important as conditions develop. Residents are advised to follow official air-quality updates and limit prolonged outdoor activity when pollution levels are high.
