NEW DELHI — Flight disruptions between India and Saudi Arabia have left thousands of Indian travellers, including Umrah pilgrims, facing uncertainty over their return journeys as airlines extend service suspensions amid security concerns in the region.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said around 3,000 stranded Umrah pilgrims had returned to India over the previous week on available flights. More than 10,000 other pilgrims with regular bookings had also travelled home during the same period.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah are coordinating with airlines and tour operators to help those still stranded return as early as possible. Both missions have established 24-hour helplines and are providing assistance with community volunteers.
Flight cancellations continue to affect several Saudi routes. IndiGo has extended the suspension of flights to and from Riyadh until October 31, while services to Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah remain suspended until October 27. Akasa Air has also extended some Saudi flight suspensions into November. Travellers are advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest arrangements.
Although airports in Jeddah, Madinah and Dammam remain operational, security-related disruptions and changes to airline schedules continue to affect travel plans. Alternative services through carriers including Saudia and Flynas may be available on some routes, depending on the destination and schedule.
The uncertainty has also affected Malayali expatriates and families planning journeys between Kerala and Saudi Arabia. Travellers are advised to confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport and follow official advisories issued by Indian diplomatic missions and Saudi authorities.
The government says efforts are continuing to facilitate the return of those still awaiting flights. However, no single confirmed timeline has been announced for the normal resumption of all affected services.
