Ooty: Heavy rain triggered multiple landslides in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district, disrupting traffic on roads leading to Ooty and prompting authorities to advise tourists against travelling to the region.
Landslides were reported along the Mettupalayam–Ooty National Highway and the Mettupalayam–Kotagiri State Highway. At Burliar, mud, rocks and trees fell on a government bus, damaging the vehicle and triggering a rescue operation.
More than 150 students from Kerala who were visiting the region were rescued after being stranded because of the landslides, according to reports. Traffic had been disrupted for several hours overnight.
Landslides were reported at 14 locations on the Coonoor road and three locations on the Kotagiri road. Authorities stopped vehicles heading towards Ooty and suspended government bus services as a precaution.
Travellers have been advised to check official road and transport updates before making plans to visit the Nilgiris.
