TEHRAN: Iran has said it will not resume negotiations with the United States until its demands are met, highlighting the continuing obstacles to diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions.
The position was conveyed during a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who has been involved in mediation efforts.
Iran’s demands include ending the US blockade on Iranian ports, lifting restrictions on its oil exports and halting hostilities across regional fronts. Tehran has also said it will not transfer its enriched nuclear material abroad.
The United States, meanwhile, has called for a substantial reduction in Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity. Iran denies seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Pakistan has sought to facilitate dialogue between the two sides, but major differences remain over sanctions, regional security and the nuclear programme.
The latest statements suggest that a resumption of talks will depend on whether both sides can find common ground on these issues.
