DUBLIN: Ireland is preparing for heavy rain and potentially disruptive weather as Storm Austen approaches, with a nationwide Status Yellow rain warning due to take effect on Thursday evening.
Met Éireann, Ireland’s national meteorological service, has issued the warning for all counties from 7pm on Thursday, October 22, until 8am on Friday, October 23. Heavy rain is expected to spread eastwards across the country, bringing the risk of difficult travelling conditions and localised flooding. Outdoor activities could also be affected.
The weather system is expected to bring rain to the southwest first on Thursday before it spreads northeastwards across Ireland during the day. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to affect parts of the country as the system moves through, although the exact areas most affected will depend on its track.
With the ground already saturated in some locations, further heavy rain could run off quickly and increase the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and built-up communities. Motorists are being urged to take extra care, allow more time for journeys and avoid driving through flooded roads.
Wednesday, October 21, is expected to bring a mixture of sunny spells, cloud and scattered showers. A separate Status Yellow rain warning for Dublin and Wicklow, which covered the period from 1am to 8am on Wednesday, has now expired. However, showers may continue in parts of the country.
Storm Austen is forecast to pass close to Ireland’s southern coast from Thursday evening into Friday morning before moving towards the United Kingdom. As it passes, heavy rain is expected to clear eastwards, followed by blustery showers and strong, gusty northwesterly winds.
Marine warnings have also been issued, with strong winds expected around Irish coastal waters. Conditions at sea could be hazardous for small craft, while exposed coastal areas may experience difficult conditions.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into the October bank holiday weekend. Met Éireann has forecast another area of low pressure that could bring further rain and windy conditions on Saturday and Sunday. There is still uncertainty about the system’s track and the extent of its impact, and further warnings may be issued.
Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates, check warnings for their own counties and follow local safety advice. People travelling during the warning period should be prepared for possible delays and changing road conditions.
