MELBOURNE — Independent Australian Member of Parliament Helen Haines is fighting for her life in a Melbourne hospital after being struck by an SUV outside her regional electorate office on Monday afternoon in what authorities described as an apparent deliberate act.
Haines, 65, was standing at the boot of a vehicle outside her office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, roughly 250 kilometres northeast of Melbourne, at around 3:35 p.m. when a white Toyota LandCruiser turned and drove toward her, pinning her between the two vehicles.
Bystanders immediately intervened at the scene, administering first aid and detaining the driver until police arrived. Haines was treated locally before being airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she remains in critical condition following emergency surgery.
Victoria Police arrested a 43-year-old man from the nearby town of Tarrawingee. Officers located a knife inside the SUV and have launched an extensive investigation into whether the suspect and Haines were known to each other. Joint counter-terrorism investigators have been activated as part of the protocol, though police noted the incident is currently being treated as isolated, with no ongoing threat to the community.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident in an address, stating: "This wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear. We don't know what the motivation is". Albanese praised the quick actions of the public and expressed deep concern over the safety of elected representatives, noting a troubling rise in hostile rhetoric across the political landscape.
Leaders from across the political spectrum echoed shock and solidarity. Haines, a former nurse and midwife, has represented the federal rural electorate of Indi since 2019, having made history as the first independent MP to succeed another independent in the same seat.
In a statement, Haines's family expressed gratitude to the bystanders, police, and healthcare teams who responded, requesting privacy as she receives critical care.
