NEW DELHI: India has introduced a cap on trade margins for 137 anti-cancer medicines in a move aimed at making cancer treatment more affordable for patients.
Under the new measure, trade margins on the identified medicines will be limited to 30 per cent of their maximum retail prices. The measure covers more than 1,000 medicine brands, including drugs used to treat several types of cancer.
The revised prices are scheduled to take effect on November 9, 2026. Depending on existing prices and mark-ups, some medicines could become substantially cheaper, although the actual reduction will vary by product.
Manufacturers have been directed to submit revised maximum retail prices to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority. The authorities will need to monitor implementation to ensure that the changes are reflected in prices paid by patients.
The decision is particularly significant for families facing the high and often prolonged costs of cancer treatment. Its practical impact will depend on compliance by manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies, as well as patients’ access to the medicines covered by the order.
