NEW DELHI — The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of an Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea. The coordinated operation, which lasted around 48 hours, resulted in the safe recovery of both the vessel and its crew, approximately 3,000 km from Mumbai. An Indian Navy warship and specialised personnel took part in the mission, with support from the Indian Air Force.
The Iranian fishing vessel, named Azini, was seized on October 29 by 12 armed Somali pirates. After receiving information about the hijacking, the Indian Navy tracked the vessel and launched an operation to secure its release. Naval forces subsequently intercepted the boat, brought it under control and freed all 20 crew members. Weapons were also recovered from the vessel, according to reports.
The operation forms part of India's continuing efforts to safeguard commercial shipping and fishing vessels across the Indian Ocean region. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Navy for its coordinated response. The successful rescue has also highlighted the importance of maritime surveillance and rapid-response capabilities in tackling piracy and other security threats in international waters.
