Clocks go forward by an hour at 1am on Sunday March 27
Winter in Ireland and Europe will end at 1.00 am Greenwich Mean Time on Sunday 27th March 2022. There will be a difference of only 4.30 hours with Indian time
This means Irish people will lose an hour of sleep, but evenings will start to get brighter.
Summer time 'Summer time' will start on Sunday morning, March 27th. Summer time is adjusted to 1 hour ahead. That is, 1 am will be changed to 2 am. In the current year, the time change takes place on the morning of the last Sunday in March. This is the shortest night of the year.
At 1am on Sunday, clocks will go forward from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to Irish Summer Time (IST). The clocks will move from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to Irish Summer Time (IST) this Sunday at 1am.
Most smartphones, tablets and computers will update automatically. However, since the country is locked down, people can not take full advantage of the extension of time. Under EU law, all 28 member states and all clocks go back to the last Sunday in October and move on to the last Sunday in March.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS SCRAPPED?
But Irish people may never have to change their clocks backwards or forwards for daylight savings after March as, it has been revealed.
A majority 84 per cent of people across Europe want turning back the clocks scrapped according to the results of an EU Commission public consultation.
The review, which was backed by a group of MEPs, claims that daylight savings has a detrimental effect of people’s health as well as Europe’s energy use.
WHY WE CHANGE CLOCKS
The moving of the clocks was first introduced during World War One. Germany was the first country to adopt the clock-changing plan on April 30, 1916, and on May 21, Britain followed suit, during the height of the First World War.
The measure was first put in place by Germany and Austria and followed on by the allies – to conserve coal.
Its interesting origins can be contributed to George Vincent Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist in 1895.
The campaign which led to the creation of BST and Daylight Savings Time (DST) was started by William Willett in 1907 in a bid to stop people wasting valuable hours of light in the summer months.
