The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has blocked 22 YouTube channels for spreading misinformation about India's national security and foreign relations. In an order issued on Monday, the ministry said the YouTube channels had used the logos and misleading thumbnails of TV news channels to mislead viewers. In addition, three Twitter accounts, a Facebook account and a news website were blocked.
“These channels were involved in spreading false information that affected India's sovereignty, national security and relations with other countries. Of the blocked Pakistani YouTube channels, Duniya Mary Aagi had 4.2 lakh subscribers, with a total of over 11.2 crore views, Ghulam Nabi Madni had over 37.09 lakh views and Haqeeqat TV had over 40 lakh subscribers.
The government-blocked Twitter accounts are all Pakistan-based handles and are linked to the same YouTube channels that were blocked, including 'Ghulam Nabi Madani', 5,553 followers, 'Duniya Mary Aagi' with 4,063 followers (and the channel's Facebook page with 3,83,800 banned). .
The ministry said it had used multiple YouTube channels to post fake news on a number of issues, including the Indian Armed Forces and Jammu and Kashmir. It says the blocked content includes some "anti-India" content posted from multiple social media accounts coordinated by Pakistan.
According to screen grubs shared by the ministry, the channels posted fake headlines about India's involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war, false declarations of nationwide closure in India, and false headlines about attacks by other countries on India.
"The Ministry has observed that a significant amount of misleading content published by these Indian YouTube-based channels in relation to the current situation in Ukraine is aimed at endangering India's foreign relations with other countries," the ministry said.
Since December 2021, the I&B Ministry has issued instructions to block 78 YouTube-based news channels and several other social media accounts related to national security.
"Blocked Indian YouTube channels have used the templates and logos of some TV news channels, including images of their news anchors to mislead viewers into believing the news is authentic. , ”The ministry said.
