Credit history information changed: Bank of Ireland faces multiple civil lawsuits
The investigation found that customers' information had been altered in a way that was detrimental to their credit history. The Bank of Ireland may face multiple civil lawsuits after an investigation found that 47,000 customers' information had been altered in a way that was detrimental to their credit history.
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has found that the bank has violated the EU's GDPR law on data protection and privacy in connection with inaccurate information sent to the Central Credit Register (CCR).
In some cases, incorrect data was added to a customer's file to indicate that they were "in financial distress". When the Bank of Ireland first contacted the DPC about the error, it was found to have affected the customer. About 47,000 data topics were eventually violated, the DPC said.
The DPC said the bank could not "explain" waiting until November or December 2019 to inform customers when it could have done so last June in connection with a high-risk incident in which 236 people misreported credit card information. It took the Bank of Ireland more than 18 months to give the final number to the victims.
