This is my humble request to all my readers, I strongly believe that I have dysgraphia so please pardon my word choices and spelling mistakes. Anyway let me share with you some interesting facts about my professional life on this Nurses Day.
In August 2018, I wrote the OET exam for the very first time. The result was 3B and C+, for writing. At that time, the score was not accepted by any country. As I was not financially sound enough to reappear the exam I did not attempt again. However, in November 2019 NMC started to accept the above- mentioned score. I was super excited. I did all the paperwork in a fast pace manner. I approached one of the famous uk recruitment agencies in Kerala. I was selected by one nhs. In the beginning itself , I reminded the agency that my language validity only valid until August 2020. I was informed you didn’t not worry, we will sort it out. I believed them and went to their Kerala office for documentation. As per them, I wi be recruited within 45 days. Therefore, I resigned from my job and waited for visa.
Later on, I realized that they were so-many candidates like me was waiting for visa and I understood that I will not be going within 45 days so I decided to find new job in Mumbai, where i could get better salary than my previous employer.
On 21 st March 2020, I traveled to Mumbai with one small backpack with all my certificates, passport, atm and all. Since India was hit by first wave of Covid 19, passengers were hardly on that train. I started sleeping on upper berth, kept my backpack securely, but I could not sleep since I was travelling alone.
Around 4:30 am, someone pulled out my backpack and jumped out of the running train. I was shattered and helpless .I was about to jump out of the train to catch the thief. Somehow, other passengers stopped from doing that. Police came and asked me to give complaint in next station. Since I kept my mobile phone in my pocket, I was able to block my sim and bank transactions. Next station was Goa, got down and submitted written complaint there.
Goan police gave me second class tickets to travel till Manglore. I met Aysha and family during that journey, they gave me food and 500 rupees to travel to Kerala. Next day, onwards, India was under lockdown. I was struggled a lot to get my replacement certificates as it was lockdown. However, I managed to get all my documents, which necessary for uk visa process. Unfortunately, NMC announced that, they will not accept any candidate whose language language validity expires before clearing OSCE.
This announcement was in July first week. I was damn sure that I will not reach uk before my oet validity expiry. Therefore, I applied ireland because Ireland’ s requirements was bit different from the UK. I managed to get NMBI decision letter and secured job offer in one of the most famous HSE hospital.
Friends, still my story is not ended here.
I was thrilled as I got adaptation in ICU. First assessment meeting went perfect. I got signatures in my procedure book and positive feed back. Later on, I understood true colour of the ….,..,. I saw many dirty plays there . In total, I was informed in a meeting that I failed adaptation. I was shattered and insulted. Like a coward, I escaped from there to India. After reaching India, I did not go and see either my parents or my child. My partner took a room in outer Mumbai, where no South Indians prefer to stay.
As we did not have money and no patience to wait OET result, we decided that I should write IELTS. No money for coaching, so prepared for exam with my partner’ s help. I was hesitant for computer typing, with the support of my partner, I appeared computer IELTS exam within one month. Within 3 days, result was published, I could not clear speaking that time. Again I appeared exam, I did not get score for writing. Started preparing next exam . My partner was so confident about me so he gave my writing for revaluation. Revaluation result was successful.
Then I approached an agency and got selected in one month f nhs. I was waiting for cohort list, I got email from the NHS, they could not proceed with my file as my NMC validity only January 2022. Immediately, I contacted another agency and appeared interview. I reached uk mid of November. After quarantine, I directly, went for one week OSCE training and appeared exam on 29 November. At last, I got NMC pin on 10 th December.
I feel that my experience may give hope to others to chase their dream even though you may face thousands of hurdles.
I take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped in my difficult time. Above all, my partner who is awesome, stand for me all the time.
With love
